Understanding Four-Wheel Drive

FullSizeRender 139

When we are driving a 4×4 vehicle most of the time we drive it like it’s a two-wheel drive vehicle and don’t give that lever or knob a moment’s thought. Then one day we find ourselves on a slick surface and hear that tire start to spin. We press the gas and go nowhere. Yikes. Time to use that option we purchased for peace-of-mind but hardly ever use. The question is do you use the one marked 2H, 4H or 4L? What do those even mean? In this month’s post, we will answer both of these questions.

Below is a schematic we will reference with the basic parts of a four-wheeled drivetrain.

drivetrain

Power from the engine is sent through the transmission to the transfer case. When the vehicle is operated in two-wheel drive the transfer case is virtually invisible to the operation of the vehicle. The power continues down the rear drive shaft to power the rear wheels. This is how our vehicle runs when 2H is selected during our normal day to day driving. The H refers to the high gear in the transfer case. When we find ourselves on a slick surface such as snow or mud, now is the time to switch to 4H. This keeps the transfer case in high gear and also sends power down the front drive shaft to the front differential that powers the front wheels and helps us get moving again. As a general rule of thumb, don’t drive faster than 35-40 mph when in 4H to protect the transfer case. Four-wheel drive low (4L), is the last selection that we have to look at. This is used on steep inclines or deep mud. The gear ratio is very low in this setting which gives you maximum power but very low speeds. In this

Four-wheel drive low (4L), is the last selection that we have to look at. This is used on steep inclines or deep mud. The gear ratio is very low in this setting which gives you maximum power but very low speeds. In this setting, we want to keep our speeds below 15 mph. Another use for the low setting is for steep declines at slow speeds. This causes the engine to slow the vehicle without engaging the brakes the whole way down. So there is a look at the basics of your four-wheel drive settings. As always consult your owner’s manual for specifics about your vehicle and always feel free to ask us about it your particular vehicle. We’re always here to help you operate it as efficiently and as safely as possible!

Choosing the Right Husqvarna Mower For You

IMG_6486

The thing about our shop is, we only carry items that we love, that we use ourselves, and that we can truly say are a value to our customers. So when we suggest a Husqvarna tool to you, it’s only because we truly believe that it’s the best product out there for the money. With Spring starting this week, we thought we’d talk through the options in mowers. Because spring brings warmth, longer days, and grass to mow!

IMG_5125There are a couple different types of riding mowers that we have at the shop, and all are made for different wants and needs depending on how much you mow and how often. One great thing about Husqvarna in general though, is that they are easy to operate. They have a pedal-operated hydrostatic transmission that allows you to keep your hands on the wheel and adjust your speed with foot pedals. The gauges and controls are easy to see from the driver’s seat. And speaking of the seat–they’re always adjustable and have a cup holder. Because cup holders are the main thing that make mowing fun..! Beyond that, there’s also an automatic or electronic rear differential which increases traction when cutting wet grass or when you’re on an incline.

IMG_4677One factor we appreciate a lot with Husqvarna is the Rapid Replace blade system. This allows the cutting blades to easily be removed and replaced without needing any tools. All models feature a built-in water hose connect port to make it easy to clean your mowing deck. The deck is reinforced and powder-coated to provide durability and corrosion resistance. It’s small features like this that make your mower run better for longer.

One feature that is noteworthy on select models and that you may want to opt for is the ClearCut deck. It delivers a perfect cut even on uneven terrain. It generates airflow to raise the grass blades for a clean, precise cut from one side of the mower deck to the other. This is available on both riding and zero turn mowers.

IMG_4674

Not only are there mowers, but a wide variety of attachments. They can be fitted with garden dump carts, spreaders, brooms, rakes, and more. When your mower can do more than mow, why only use it for cutting grass? Stop by our shop today to check out all that we have. If we don’t have what you need, we can order it! And beyond mowers, we carry the full line, so we have trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, carts, hedge clippers….you name it!

And if you’re in the market for a pre-owned vehicle, check out all that we currently have at the shop. We buy these vehicles and make sure they’re good-to-go, so buy from our family, because you know you can trust us. Call (910) 483-2958 for more information on any of the vehicles below.

Please like and share! We love your feedback. Also feel free to check out all that we have going on on the Crumpler’s Automotive Facebook Page and on our website.

Why Yes, You SHOULD Get a Motorcycle!

We’ve written about motorcycle safety and being aware of riders on the road. We’ve listed statistics about accidents and how to avoid them. This is all because we want motorcycle riders to be SAFE, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want them out on the road. We actually believe quite the opposite–we love seeing riders out there on the open road!

17879964_1242582062503691_5111723359751750928_o.jpg

Here are just a few reasons why you should get that bike and why we think you’ll love riding one:

More Humans17880180_1242583825836848_2123170349868692026_o

The average motorcycle has far more human hands involved in their builds than robotic parts. They’re a bit trickier to build out in a lot of ways and require more direct human contact.

It’s Good for Your Health

A 180 lb man will burn 40 calories more per hour riding a motorcycle than driving in a car. It’s also great for your mental health. The open space and the zen of the movement and are incredibly calming and promote peace in your daily life.

You Can’t Text and Ride!

Riding requires the type of focus that people driving cars SHOULD also have, but usually don’t. You are completely present and aware of your surroundings because your life depends on it, and because it’s not possible to multitask. We consider this a good thing. Isn’t it nice to just focus on one thing?

Fuel Efficiency

17879862_1242579185837312_6217684791830357824_o

Most bikes get as much per gallon as a car if not more, especially if you operate them well. Higher miles per gallon leads to less carbon-dioxide emissions, and this is a perk that can’t be ignored in your “pro” list!

Your Commute Will be Loads More Fun–and Easier

Beyond just the joy of hearing your bike rev up every morning and evening and the feel of riding, your commute may become less frustrating if you can ride in a place where lane-splitting is allowed. Seriously begin to consider this benefit as you consider buying a bike. It doesn’t have to just be for your weekends. Why not enjoy your bike every day, twice a day at least?

Parking is a Dream

Smaller vehicle and special parking for motorcycles make it so easy to find a spot.

You’ll Meet Some of the Best People

There’s a brotherhood and sisterhood you join when you buy your first motorcycle. Get ready for waves and nods all the time! Plus people will go out of their way to tell you stories and ask you about your bike. If you join a group, you can have some great trips riding and make a lot of good friends along the way. Bikers help other bikers and look out for each other.

We Have a Great Shop

We have a great place to service, repair, maintain, and update your bike: Crumpler’s Custom Cycle. We always look out for our customers and guarantee that this can be your one-stop shop for all your motorcycle’s needs. Isn’t it nice to know there’s someone you can automatically trust to take care of your new bike? You’re not in this alone! Stop by or give us a call at (910) 483-9607.

What did we miss? We know there’s more, but these are the reasons that stood out to us. Add your own ideas in the comments–we’d love to hear from you!

We have so many items and vehicles for sale at our shop. We’re way more than a parts and service center. Check out all we have below and more!

How to Know a Good Mechanic

17835228_1868830079809773_6786683126750196945_o

When something goes wrong with your vehicle, you want to be able to trust the person working on it. One of the worst feelings is that tingly one where you realize someone may be trying to take advantage of you. And unfortunately, mechanics can have a bad reputation for this. We decided to put together a list of expectations that you can keep with you in case you’re ever left wondering if someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes in our field.

  1. Mechanics should be able to quickly diagnose what your problem is and offer solutions.
  2. A good mechanic should fix your vehicle effectively and efficiently, within a reasonable and agreed upon amount of time.
  3. Excellent skills in customer service are required. A customer should feel like he or she can ask questions and get straight answers. Customers should also feel taken care of and put at ease on the possible scenarios associated with their vehicle.17854701_1868829986476449_5997395442752894966_o
  4. Communication skills are on-point. Plain English is much appreciated by our average customer. Though a car’s engine can be complex, no one wants to be talked to in a way that is over your head or talked down to like you are incapable of understanding the intricacies of the issue. A good mechanic can share on whatever level the customer prefers or requires. The most important piece here is that everything is clear to the customer as the decision process is made and the plans are laid out for the repairs.
  5. A solid work ethic is a given. Your mechanic should be committed to working hard on getting your vehicle ready to run well again.
  6. Certifications set a person apart. A good mechanic is certified. This is the difference between someone that is “good with cars” and someone who has a career in this field. Plain and simple.  Mechanics have changed so much in the past 30 years. If a mechanic doesn’t try to stay current, he or she will be left behind and unable to work on newer modeled vehicles. A good mechanic understands the most advanced technology in the field.

All these qualities are the kind that we build our business on. We can proudly and humbly tell you that if you come into Crumpler’s Automotive, you will meet mechanics with all of these qualities and more. Our team will provide you with the best in service all-around. To make an appointment, call us at (910) 483-2958.

A HUGE THANKS to all of you that helped to make our Crumpler’s Custom Cycle Open House such a huge success! Much thanks to our whole team for helping out, all our volunteers, Open Road for playing some great music, and to all of YOU who attended! We hope to make this an annual event, and as it goes with Crumpler’s, we intend to only get better with age…!

‘Tis the season for mowing and yard work….Come get your new Husqvarna at the beginning of the season, and make life easier on yourself!
