Why Yes, You SHOULD Get a Motorcycle!

We’ve written about motorcycle safety and being aware of riders on the road. We’ve listed statistics about accidents and how to avoid them. This is all because we want motorcycle riders to be SAFE, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want them out on the road. We actually believe quite the opposite–we love seeing riders out there on the open road!

17879964_1242582062503691_5111723359751750928_o.jpg

Here are just a few reasons why you should get that bike and why we think you’ll love riding one:

More Humans17880180_1242583825836848_2123170349868692026_o

The average motorcycle has far more human hands involved in their builds than robotic parts. They’re a bit trickier to build out in a lot of ways and require more direct human contact.

It’s Good for Your Health

A 180 lb man will burn 40 calories more per hour riding a motorcycle than driving in a car. It’s also great for your mental health. The open space and the zen of the movement and are incredibly calming and promote peace in your daily life.

You Can’t Text and Ride!

Riding requires the type of focus that people driving cars SHOULD also have, but usually don’t. You are completely present and aware of your surroundings because your life depends on it, and because it’s not possible to multitask. We consider this a good thing. Isn’t it nice to just focus on one thing?

Fuel Efficiency

17879862_1242579185837312_6217684791830357824_o

Most bikes get as much per gallon as a car if not more, especially if you operate them well. Higher miles per gallon leads to less carbon-dioxide emissions, and this is a perk that can’t be ignored in your “pro” list!

Your Commute Will be Loads More Fun–and Easier

Beyond just the joy of hearing your bike rev up every morning and evening and the feel of riding, your commute may become less frustrating if you can ride in a place where lane-splitting is allowed. Seriously begin to consider this benefit as you consider buying a bike. It doesn’t have to just be for your weekends. Why not enjoy your bike every day, twice a day at least?

Parking is a Dream

Smaller vehicle and special parking for motorcycles make it so easy to find a spot.

You’ll Meet Some of the Best People

There’s a brotherhood and sisterhood you join when you buy your first motorcycle. Get ready for waves and nods all the time! Plus people will go out of their way to tell you stories and ask you about your bike. If you join a group, you can have some great trips riding and make a lot of good friends along the way. Bikers help other bikers and look out for each other.

We Have a Great Shop

We have a great place to service, repair, maintain, and update your bike: Crumpler’s Custom Cycle. We always look out for our customers and guarantee that this can be your one-stop shop for all your motorcycle’s needs. Isn’t it nice to know there’s someone you can automatically trust to take care of your new bike? You’re not in this alone! Stop by or give us a call at (910) 483-9607.

What did we miss? We know there’s more, but these are the reasons that stood out to us. Add your own ideas in the comments–we’d love to hear from you!

We have so many items and vehicles for sale at our shop. We’re way more than a parts and service center. Check out all we have below and more!

Some Reasons Your Car May Not Start…

car umbrell

It’s never convenient when your car won’t start. Because not only do you need to get somewhere usually, but now your “get somewhere” is going to soon be the automotive shop, which can be costly and again, inconvenient. To truly know what’s wrong with your vehicle, you’ll want to bring it into Crumpler’s Automotive and get it checked out by one of our mechanics. But we wanted to compile a list of some of the top reasons your vehicle may not be able to start, so that you can be better educated if it happens to you.

Fuel Pump Failure or Restriction

fuel pumpOne of the most common no-start issues is the failure of the in-tank electric fuel pump. This is generally due to lack of scheduled maintenance, because the fuel filter has to be changed at proper intervals. If it’s not changed, it tends to clog and not allow fuel to move through. The fuel pump can also fail if the fuel level is below a quarter of a tank for an extended period, or if you run out of gas, of course. If the fuel pump runs dry it can ruin the pump.

Timing Belt Failure or Timing Belt Tensioner Failure

timing beltTiming belts should last 40,000-60,000 miles by design. If the timing belt isn’t changed before it breaks, it can cause extensive damage within the engine in some vehicles. It’s a good rule to have the timing belt changed just before the recommended interval and at the same time check the tensioner. Replace that as well if it’s in question at the same time, as this is a common failure as well.

ECM/PCM Failure

car ecmThis is a failure in your vehicle’s computer. Unfortunately, computer failure does happen from time-to-time with automobiles. There are tests that can detect these issues quickly.

Batteries, Cables, and/or Clamps

Neglected and corroded batteries can cause a vehicle not to start. This can easily be avoided by regular maintenance as well.

Electrical Issues

There are many start-up issues caused by voltage variations. Even minor variations can cause issues in the computerized controls in most cars. This is diagnosed with a load test that will show if your vehicle performs to certain standards.

Other Issues

SBF Camshaft position sensor
Cam Sensor

Alternators: used to charge the battery. If it doesn’t work, your battery usually doesn’t either.

Cam Sensors: Sensors tell your computer when your cam is in rotation. This helps determine spark timing and fuel delivery. If they are bad, your car won’t run well or at all.

Vehicle out of fuel due to inaccurate gauges.

Engine locked due to lack of oil.

Plugged exhaust system.

If your car won’t start, it could be for one of the above reasons. Call us and we’ll be happy get it working again. We can even come and pick it up so that we can get you back on the road as quickly as possible. Call us at (910) 483-2958

How to Know a Good Mechanic

17835228_1868830079809773_6786683126750196945_o

When something goes wrong with your vehicle, you want to be able to trust the person working on it. One of the worst feelings is that tingly one where you realize someone may be trying to take advantage of you. And unfortunately, mechanics can have a bad reputation for this. We decided to put together a list of expectations that you can keep with you in case you’re ever left wondering if someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes in our field.

  1. Mechanics should be able to quickly diagnose what your problem is and offer solutions.
  2. A good mechanic should fix your vehicle effectively and efficiently, within a reasonable and agreed upon amount of time.
  3. Excellent skills in customer service are required. A customer should feel like he or she can ask questions and get straight answers. Customers should also feel taken care of and put at ease on the possible scenarios associated with their vehicle.17854701_1868829986476449_5997395442752894966_o
  4. Communication skills are on-point. Plain English is much appreciated by our average customer. Though a car’s engine can be complex, no one wants to be talked to in a way that is over your head or talked down to like you are incapable of understanding the intricacies of the issue. A good mechanic can share on whatever level the customer prefers or requires. The most important piece here is that everything is clear to the customer as the decision process is made and the plans are laid out for the repairs.
  5. A solid work ethic is a given. Your mechanic should be committed to working hard on getting your vehicle ready to run well again.
  6. Certifications set a person apart. A good mechanic is certified. This is the difference between someone that is “good with cars” and someone who has a career in this field. Plain and simple.  Mechanics have changed so much in the past 30 years. If a mechanic doesn’t try to stay current, he or she will be left behind and unable to work on newer modeled vehicles. A good mechanic understands the most advanced technology in the field.

All these qualities are the kind that we build our business on. We can proudly and humbly tell you that if you come into Crumpler’s Automotive, you will meet mechanics with all of these qualities and more. Our team will provide you with the best in service all-around. To make an appointment, call us at (910) 483-2958.

More about Crumpler’s Custom Cycle:
Crumpler’s has been a family automotive business for as long as it’s been open. Of course, they like tradition, but they also like the freshness that new ideas bring to the table. That’s why when Richie’s son Richard “George” said he was interested in working on motorcycles, Richie decided to expand into having a custom cycle shop back in 2011. It’s not just exciting to see a family member pursue his dream, it’s a thrill to be a part of it too!

Crumpler familly, Leslie, George, RichieGeorge was 19 when Crumpler’s Custom Cycle opened but it’s not like he was a newcomer to working on cars or bikes at that point in his life. His grandfather and father had worked on automobiles and heavy machinery his whole life, and he’d had plenty of hours in the shop under their tutelage to be quite adept at moving right into those footsteps. But George wanted a chance to make something new happen at the place and to blaze his own trail. He’d spent countless hours in the shop learning and working, and when he suggested a new idea for the business, his dad was happy to give him the green light.

Since that time, the shop has grown to handle all kinds of custom work plus repair and service work. “We don’t just work people’s bikes in and shuffle them out–what we do isn’t about that, “George said. “What we want to do is try to fit the bike to exactly what the owner wants.”

Because of this, the Crumplers sell wheels, do custom paint jobs, add chrome accessories and do performance work. The beauty of this line of work is the variety. George and Shop Manager Allen Bass, work on anything from classic bikes to more current models, although each presents its own challenges always. “We love piecing the puzzle together and getting a great finished product to the owner, ” George said.

Although the shop is known for variety, they still do their fair share of service and repair work. They also work on wrecked bikes and head out to shows as often as possible to see all what’s new in the industry. “What I can’t see is getting sick of this,” Richard noted. “It’s my passion, and I love making everything run the best that it can.”

Driving Tips For Your Teens

Before you know it, the days will get longer, spring will be in the air, and spring break will be happening all around. The roads will start to fill up with busy teenagers, either learning to drive, driving to and from work, or cruising in their downtime. But teenage drivers and their parents should be careful: the longer and warmer the days get, the higher the percentage of teenage accidents in vehicles also grows.

ba4c32bf73190979462c4728d16def14_blank-caution-sign-caution-plain-caution-road-sign-clipart_1155-866

We suggest that parents set aside some time ahead of time to have a talk with their teenage drivers about safety. Here are some points to consider and discuss:

No Distractions!

unknownIt can be so tempting to look at your cellphone, talk on the phone, play on the radio, and even text while driving–sometimes all at once! Emphasize with your teenage driver that it takes just a second for an accident to happen, and even less time for an inexperienced driver to lose control of a vehicle. Parents, we suggest you model good driving habits as well and refuse to be distracted while you drive. Nothing is truly that important.

Drive Defensively.

Explain the importance of anticipating situations and having a plan for how to drive well. For example, if there is a biker on the road, drivers need to be aware of the fact that they accelerate differently and also have a higher chance of losing control. Plan ahead for how to drive well with bikers and other drivers in mind, and consider all possible scenarios when choosing where to place your vehicle accordingly.

Plan Your Drive.

car-gps-accidents-2Before your teenage driver gets rolling, he or she needs to have their GPS coordinates not only punched in and calculated, but the driver should review the anticipated route. This allows the driver to have an idea of what to expect and minimizes distractions while driving.

Proper Vehicle Maintenance.

We cannot stress enough the importance of teaching your young drivers how to maintain their vehicles. Advise them on how to check fluid levels, tire pressure, and the logistics of how to do simple tasks like wiper blade replacements, etc. Also, teach your teen how to change a tire! If they don’t learn now, they’re likely to never learn, and that’s just not safe. If you don’t feel comfortable teaching them, we will happily do so. In fact, it teaches your young driver responsibility if they are the person who brings their car in for maintenance. We suggest you allow your teen to bring his or her car in, and we can teach them quite a lot about proper maintenance and care while they sit and wait!

And if you’re in the market for a great vehicle, check these out!
